It's not about knowing the deceased, it's about showing respect. And you can always report racist/obscene comments if a moderator didn't see them yet (a lot is deleted actually, but obviously that doesn't show for regular users).
Fair enough, I actually report them every time I see them and sometimes they just do not get deleted. I think that racist comments should be met with more than just warning points myself.
Anyway, your comments fell under a comment that got deleted, I don't think there was anything wrong with the conversation you guys were having (at least I see nothing wrong with it). There were spammy pics that were removed, and that was why your comments have disappeared, too.
Sad to hear of his passing, but glad he's not suffering from cancer any longer. I was a huge fan of the Beastie Boys and grew up listening to them.
